Depends what you mean by "work". If you get a 6-inline set like this and just put 3 on each side, the 3 on the "treble side" will be reversed, with the buttons coming out of a different position than the "bass side". It will "work" functionally, acting like a 3+3 set, but most would consider it wrong because of the offset buttons and appearance from behind the headstock.
