In a perfect world, yes. Your nut should be slotted to the gauge of strings you plan on using. That said, nearly all production guitars are not slotted this way, and most people change their string gauge without re-slotting their nut. So, although not ideal, you can certainly get away with 9-42 strings in 10-46 slots.
