You may have male and female DC plugs/jacks mixed up. Most people do. It helps to think of them in the same terms as XLR plugs/jacks. The end with the pins is called the "male" side, even though the other end is the one that goes "inside". The one going inside has the holes that the pins plug into, making it the "female" end.
It's the same with DC jacks and plugs. The "male" side is the one with the center pin (like what is on almost all pedals and other electronic devices). The "female" side is the one with the hole where the center pin goes in (usually on the plug that connects to the pedal). These cables have dual female ends, for connecting power supplies to pedals (pedals and power supplies always have "male" jacks).
Of course, you may run into arguments over this because enough people get it backwards that it is becoming just as common to refer to them the opposite (technically wrong) way.
